What’s in a name? Everything…
Alchemy and the meaning behind our brand name
In 2003, my sister Cyrille and I were sitting in a tearoom in the Old Town of Geneva, Switzerland, brainstorming a name for the brand of skin care products that was about to be born. No focus groups. No consultants. Just two sisters, pot after pot of verbena tea.
The list of names we considered was long; in the end, we decided on Alchimie Forever. Yes, we picked a brand name that is challenging to pronounce correctly (alchimie, the French word for alchemy, is pronounced al-shee-mee), and even harder to spell, basically getting an F in Marketing 101 (at least our name starts with A so we are at the top of alphabetical lists…).
But we picked this name for reasons so specific, so authentic, so strongly tied to our philosophy of beauty, that we immediately knew this was the right name for our brand.
Let’s start at the beginning: what is alchemy?
Alchemy is the science that pre-dated chemistry, combining elements of chemistry, metallurgy, philosophy, health, mysticism, and magic. While the history of alchemy starts in BC, its heyday was in Europe during the Middle Ages. The alchemists were focused on several key pursuits:
· Chrysopoeia: This refers to the transformation of lead into gold – or more broadly, the transmutation of base metals into noble metals; it is about the elevation of something ordinary into something higher. Ultimately, alchemy was about inner transformation as much as physical change.
· The Elixir of Life and the Philosopher’s Stone: Both pursuits are related to eternal life and health. The Elixir of Life was meant to be a universal medicine to cure all ills. The Philosopher’s Stone, also known as the Stone of Eternal Youth, referred to a substance that would grant eternal life and youthfulness
· The Doctrine of Signatures: This is the idea that the way a plant looks (its shape, color, or texture) is related to its health benefits, drawing analogies between a plant and the part of the human body it heals. This rests on the principle that “like heals like.” Think about walnuts – they look like the brain, and as such have long been thought to be good for brain health. The alchemists were the first to think about plants in this way.
How do these three concepts translate into the world of Alchimie Forever?
· Science and chemistry: alchemy evolved to become the science of chemistry. Skin care is impossible without chemistry, which drives and supports our formulations. There can be no skin care without science.
· Magic and transformation: Transforming lead into gold is transforming something base, ugly, cheap, into something shiny, beautiful, and expensive. And isn’t skin care about transformation? Also, skin care is not only about science, but also about magic. This is why our brand motto is Self Care Through Skin Care. This is why we believe that Looking Good, Means Feeling Good, Means Doing Good.
· Botanical ingredients: As the first to identify plants as having healthful benefits, the alchemists paved the way for herbalists to categorize plants, and eventually for modern pharmacology. All of our formulations feature powerful botanicals.
In that one word - alchemy - live the three pillars of Alchimie Forever: science, transformation, and botanicals.
Meet Paracelsus
Our brand Alchimie Forever was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Is it a coincidence that one of the most famous alchemists is Swiss? Meet Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim, aka Paracelsus. He was born in 1493 (some sources say 1494) in Einsiedeln, Switzerland and died on September 24, 1541 in Salzburg, Austria. He was a physician, astrologer, and alchemist. Paracelsus is credited for helping to shift alchemy towards medicine. He is known as the “father of toxicology” and was the first to say that “the dose makes the poison,” a concept still relevant in modern-day medicine. The full quote is believed to be: “All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; only the dose makes a thing not a poison.” That principle - precision in dosage - remains at the heart of responsible skin care formulation today.
Back to our brand name, Alchimie Forever
We wanted to use the French word for alchemy as a nod to our origins in Geneva, which is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.
“Forever” felt inevitable. Not only was our brand was born inside Forever Institut — my father’s medical spa — but the word carries its own promise: longevity, youthfulness, endurance. Not immortality, but continuity.
(Side note, our arrow logo is also a nod to our dermatological origins as my father introduced pulsed dye laser technology to Europe in the late 1980s: the arrow represents a ray of light, the beam of a laser.)
If alchemy was a color…
Historically, purple is the color of royalty and power. Psychologically, purple is often interpreted as magic, creativity, introspection, imagination, intuition, and mystery. It is 100% coherent with the concept of alchemy.
And white, culturally, is strongly associated with medicine and hospitals. It conveys cleanliness, sterility, with the white lab coat becoming a symbol of scientific and medical authority.
Our brand colors are, not surprisingly, white and purple. Purple is a nod to the more mystical and magical pursuits of alchemy, while white is a nod to what alchemy became – chemistry, science, and medicine.
In conclusion
Alchimie Forever was never meant to be an easy name. It was meant to be an honest one. A name that honors science and mystery. Switzerland and innovation. Medicine and magic. And transformation. Skin care, at its best, is transformation - into the most confident version of yourself. That is our alchemy.
